A stinky problem: Diarrhoea in Pets

diarrhoea in pets

Sick pets can be a scary reality for pet owners because often we don’t know what is going on. Diarrhoea in pets can make us anxious, so here’s when not to worry and when a trip to the vet is actually needed.

WHEN TO RELAX

If your furry friend has been experiencing loose stools for less than 48 hours, shows no sign of discomfort and is otherwise happy and bright then it is likely your pet has just eaten something that doesn’t agree with him. In this case, do not over-exert your furry friend and put out plenty of fresh water and chances to go to the bathroom. Boiling a ratio of 1/3 chicken and 2/3 white rice is a bland meal that will not upset his tummy further.

DO NOT: Use human medications or pet medications without the guidance of a professional.

If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours then you may need a vet visit.

WHEN TO VISIT THE VET

  • Very water diarrhoea that has been going on for 48 hours+ can lead to dehydration and should be treated by a professional.
  • If diarrhoea is accompanied by vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite.
  • If visible signs of pain are present – stretching out of abdomen, excessive panting, whining or yelping when touched or pacing.
  • If you notice bloating or a distended abdomen
  • If there is blood in the faeces or faeces is black
  • If Diarrhoea has been intermittent for weeks, not days, a vet consultation is advised as this can be a sign of food intolerance, infection or other internal problems that will need to be sorted.

Often in these cases early treatment means a world of difference to your pet, so if you are ever concerned please call Pet Doctors Palm Beach on 5576 0400 for advice. We may advise you to bring a fresh sample with you and it always helps to keep note of what your pet has eaten and how they have reacted at certain times.
