Why Playtime Is More Than Just Fun!

Pets can be a lot of fun, especially when it comes to playtime! But did you know that your fun and games with your dog or cat come with more benefits than one – they’re an essential part of your pet’s health and wellbeing!

Here are the main reasons why playtime should be a daily activity:

1. It maintains a healthy weight
Without regular activity your pet can easily become idle and obese because they are not using up the amount of calories they are eating. Regular movement and playtime can ensure their metabolism and heart rate is increased, which both increase your pet’s lifespan and decrease their waistline and risk of chronic disease. A sedentary lifestyle is no good for anyone.

2. It boosts moods
Getting your pet moving isn’t just a boredom buster, it’s a great way to alleviate stress levels in both you and your furry friend! This is because even short periods of fun play can boost endorphins. It is proven that even small amounts of playtime can have a positive impact on your pet’s quality of life. If you can, try and spend at least 15 minutes a day playing with your pet and see how much it lifts them up!

3. It reduces behavioural problems
Bored pets tend to get up to mischief. The saying “a tired dog is a happy dog” is very true. Behavioral problems can emerge when there isn’t a proper outlet for all their pent-up energy. This is more the case for certain breeds, like Border Collies, who are highly energetic and intelligent. Cats all have some level of prey drive in them and play lets them satisfy those natural instincts. The best way to do this is to get a toy that mimics prey, like a cat teaser.

4. It strengths pet/pet parent bonds
Playtime brings a deeper level of connection with your pet that can’t be found in treat time or simple patting. Releasing any pent up energy, anxiety or aggression can help your pet be more relaxed around you which is a real bond stregnthener.

Our pets love attention, and they love it even more when it involves fun, so always try to allocate some time if you don’t already to really get playing with them each day and you’ll notice a big difference in their whole demeanor!
