Why We Recommend Pet Blood Testing

blood testing pets

Because communication with pets limits their ability to tell us when something is wrong physical examination and sometimes pet blood testing is required to check everything is working as it should be.

Like the human equivalent, pet blood testing is very similar and with the use of in-house equipment and external laboratories Pet Doctors is able to deliver timely information on your pet’s health.

There are several reasons why we would recommend a blood test. Most commonly, any pets that will undergo an anaesthetic procedure have blood tests prior to identify any problems that may arise. Any underlying diseases that are specific to breed, lifestyle or life-stage can help to be identified through testing of the blood. A routine test assesses the function of organs and also the condition of the immune system. Most commonly, the liver, kidneys and pancreas are tested, as well as red and white blood cell counts.

How often is pet blood testing recommended?

All pets are different. They have different requirements and circumstances. Pet Doctors always require a blood test prior to anaesthetic procedures for safety reasons. We also recommend a blood test for senior pets as illnesses are more prevalent as our pets grow older. Any pets suspected or prone to certain diseases will also be recommended a blood test.

Blood testing is a very simple procedure for our fur friends. Commonly they don’t even seem to notice the pin-prick of the needle as it is inserted. A Pet Doctors nurse will clip a small patch of hair from your pet’s arm or neck and will clean the area with a sterilising swab. A small amount of blood is then collected in a small tube for testing. The whole process is a quick and relatively painless one for your pet.

For senior pets: Pet Doctors now offers our Seniors Wellness Program for dogs and cats 7 years and over that includes a full blood profile among other tests to monitor and diagnose diseases in our ageing pets.
