Dealing With Matted Fur

Matted Fur

If your dog has a longer coat, or fur that tends to shed, they will most likely end up with clumps of matted fur. Dog hair shafts are “barbed” and some breeds that have more barbs on the shaft than others, which means they will mat if not taken care of properly. These matted knots not only look horrible, but they can also hide infections, sores and bugs so it is best to prevent them if possible.

Causes

  • Friction on fur caused by rubbing and frequent contact with grass or dirt. (for example, behind the ears, armpits, legs etc)
  • Frequent laying and sitting down compacts fur in certain spots
  • Neglect/lack of grooming

Prevention – Prevention is key to stopping matted fur.

  • Bathe your pet regularly as clean coats are less likely to knot.
  • Regularly brush you pet’s hair (see below for instructions)
  • Buy a brush that is designed for your breed
  • You can add moisture with a spray bottle and even invest in pet hair detangling sprays.
  • Certain shampoos will help keep fur from matting
  • Invest in a pet friendly leave-in conditioner
  • For tangles that have already formed try a little dusting of cornstarch to help ease the knot.

How to brush your pet

  • Use a brush that considers your pet’s breed and size. i.e. a smaller brush for a maltese.
  • Collect a small amount of hair at a time
  • Lift the hair with the flat of your hand between the hair and the body.
  • Place thumb over the hair to keep it from pulling on your pet’s skin
  • Gently drop the brush into the hair and stroke to the ends.
  • Continue around the body
  • We recommend brushing at least once a week, but some breeds will need more regular grooming.

When it’s time to use scissors

Our pets have the mentalities of 2-5 year olds and there is only so much they will take when you are trying to remove a knot. Sometimes, for the sake of kindness, it’s time just to snip that tangle out completely. After all, that fur will grow back in no time!
