The Gold Coast is in the midst of a heatwave, and because our pets cool themselves through panting, lying on cool surfaces and drinking cool water, hot and humid weather like we’re experiencing at the moment is the most dangerous for them.
So, here’s how to keep them feeling cooler:
TIPS FOR DOGS
• Check your pet’s water regularly
• Add ice cubes to their water
• Give them plenty of shade
• Bring them in from outside
• Place beds/mats in cool areas
• Dampen pet blankets or mats with water
• Invest in cooling mats/jackets
• Give a bath with lukewarm water
• Take them for a swim (we recommend getting a safety jacket)
• Freeze treats in some water with a popsicle stick to make a popsicle
• Take them for a walk during sunrise and sunset.
• Put on pet-approved sunscreen
TIPS FOR CATS
• Keep water inside
• Leave a fan on for them
• Put down wet towels
• Put on pet-approved sunscreen if outdoors
