We all love to cuddle up to our precious little fur babies when they’re nice and clean for a good bath! But did you know that over bathing puppies can potentially lead to them developing allergies to things in their environment?
The skin provides a barrier which naturally prevents allergens from penetrating into the deeper layers and setting up the allergic response. The oils in the skin are an important part of this barrier function, and over-bathing can deplete the oils and so cause a breakdown in the natural defense system.
Obviously puppies need to be washed if they get very dirty but use a gentle, natural shampoo. Do not make the water too hot (body temperature is fine) and make sure you rinse the puppy well. In between baths a leave in conditioner such as Aloveen can help to neutralize the “doggy” smell without depleting those essential oils. Try to avoid bathing more frequently than once very 4-6 weeks.
If your puppy has any skin lesions it is best to seek veterinary advice before using any topical over the counter treatments. For more information please come and see our friendly staff at Pet Doctors or call us on 5576 0400.
