How To Spot The Signs Of Diabetes

diabetes

Diabetes can be caused by many factors, include genetics and obesity. Obesity in pets is a big cause of this disease, and with the amount of overweight dogs and cats that present to us growing every year it’s no surprise that this disease is becoming more and more prevalent.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder and occurs when your pet’s body is unable to normalize sugar levels in the bloodstream. This disease can be categorised into two forms, Type I and Type II.

Type I: Occurs when your pet’s body cannot make enough insulin to lower blood sugar levels – Also known as insulin dependent Diabetes.
Type II: Occurs when the body produces insulin, but is not responsive to it – Also known as non-insulin dependent Diabetes.

Knowing the Signs

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Weight loss
  • Dull coat
  • Cataracts in dogs

If you notice any of these signs it is important to bring your pet to Pet Doctors where we will be able to investigate for diabetes using basic bloodwork and urinalysis. As with most diseases, diabetes is best caught and treated early as proper management of the disease will reduce the risk of certain complications.

Treating Diabetes

This disease is manageable and is generally done so with insulin injections, dietary adjustments, exercise changes and weight loss. There are different types of insulin and we will prescribe the one specifically required by your pet.
