Most pets will have diarrhoea at some time in their lives. In some cases the diarrhoea is self limiting and your pet will recover quickly without treatment. In other cases the diarrhoea is more serious and your pet may need treatment to clear the primary cause and/or supportive care to combat dehydration and infection.
Here are some tips to avoid some common causes of diarrhoea:-
- Feed your pet a consistent good quality diet. If you change the type of food do it gradually.
- Avoid feeding table scraps.
- Discourage your pet from chewing at garden plants.
- Worm your pet regularly.
The earlier treatment is sought when your pet develops diarrhoea, the quicker the recovery, so here are a few tips to help you decide the right time to bring your pet to Pet Doctors.
We recommend veterinary care if:-
- Your pet is vomiting as well.
- There is significant blood in the diarrhoea (a spot or 2 of fresh blood is “normal” if the pet has been straining to defecate)
- The diarrhoea lasts more than 24 hours.
- Your pet is off its food.
- Your pet is lethargic.
- Your pet has obvious abdominal pain.
