What to Expect:

Below are some common questions we receive about the surgery process, and remember – all of this information will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation to ensure you feel confident and informed about your pet’s care.
When you book your pet’s surgery with us, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know. For dogs, we suggest giving them a bath the day before, as they won’t be able to be washed until their stitches are removed, usually around 10-14 days post-surgery. We’ll also remind you to withhold food after 8pm the night before and stop water at 6am on the day of surgery.
There is always a risk associated with anaesthesia, however here at Pet Doctors Palm Beach we take every precaution to ensure your pet’s safety before, during and after their anesthetic.
Before surgery, we offer a pre-anaesthetic blood test to check vital organ function, minimizing the risk associated with anaesthesia.
During surgery, your pet will have intravenous fluids administered, which helps to stabilise the patient by maintaining blood pressure, blood volume and tissue perfusion (basically making sure enough blood gets to where it is meant to go!). They will also be continually monitored by our veterinary nurses, using advanced monitoring equipment.
After surgery, your pet will be closely monitored throughout their recovery, and will be placed in a heated bed to help regulate their body temperature.

During surgery, your pet is constantly monitored by our skilled veterinary nurse. We administer intravenous fluids to keep them hydrated and maintain stable blood pressure. The surgical site is prepped with sterile equipment, and our veterinarian and team will closely monitor your pet’s vitals throughout the entire procedure.
Our team will provide you with detailed post-surgery instructions. You’ll want to keep your pet warm, quiet, and calm, as it may take up to 24 hours for the anaesthetic to fully wear off. We’ll also go over any medications, dietary needs, and how to check the incision site to prevent infection.
Yes, we schedule a complimentary post-op check 3-4 days after surgery to ensure your pet is healing well. Stitches are typically removed 10-14 days later, but we’ll provide you with a specific timeline and guidance based on your pet’s procedure.
