Diabetes can be caused by many factors, include genetics and obesity. Obesity in pets is a big cause of diabetes, and with the amount of overweight dogs and cats that present to us growing every year it’s no surprise that this disease is becoming more and more prevalent.
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder and occurs when your pet’s body is unable to normalize sugar levels in the bloodstream. This disease can be categorised into two forms, Type I and Type II.
Type I: Occurs when your pet’s body cannot make enough insulin to lower blood sugar levels – Also known as insulin dependent Diabetes.
Type II: Occurs when the body produces insulin, but is not responsive to it – Also known as non-insulin dependent Diabetes.
